Specialty and Sport Camps

Specialty Camps

Entering Grades 2 – 6
June 9 – August 1
9:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Fee: $255*   MVP (Members get a discount!): $205*

Specialty campers spend half of the day with their specialty instructor and the rest of the day with our camp counselors doing campy things such as swimming, hiking, art, sports and games.  Campers will also participate in instructional swim lessons and camp wide events. 

*Does not include Circus Camp Fees. 

Chess Camp
June 9 – 13

July 21 – 25 

Chess camp specializes in true chess mastery in an addictively fun, laughter-driven and powerfully organized format.  State Chess Champion David Brooks unleashes an arsenal of remote control clickers, mandatory chess clocks, highly-competitive, colorfully bracketed tournaments, chess movies, and candy prizes.  Campers earn colorful wristbands which denote chess rank as they compete in “promotion games” against Coach.

Yoga Camp
June 9 – 13 

Yoga camps allow kids to find their inner and outer strength, while being creative and expressing themselves. Group practice and activities considerate peer interaction and leadership skills in a non-competitive environment. Each day new yoga poses and breathing techniques are introduced around a theme, which will also include a mindfulness activity, including artful crafts, healthy snacks and yoga games.  Camp is led by Annie Damsky of Villager Yoga (villageryoga.com).

Theater Camp
June 16 – 20


"To be...or not to be?" With school out for the summer, the place to be is LJCC! Summertime is a great opportunity for creative exploration and the development of individual potential. In addition to rehearsing skits they will perform at the end of the session, campers will start the day with acting classes in which they will investigate the world of theatre through exercises that activate their voices, bodies and imaginations. Our young actors will also be invited to see Theatre LJCC's Production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at a discounted price!

Circus Camp
June 23 – 27

Fee: $310  MVP: $250 

In one week of Circus Camp, Starfish Circus Coaches will train campers in aerial skills, partner acrobatics, clowning, juggling, and showmanship as well as proper stretching and conditioning, with a focus on safety and achievement.  Working in duos, trios and groups, the camper performers prepare and present a 60-minute circus show for their family, friends and community.  In the process, they learn to set and achieve personal goals, conquer their apprehensions and shine as part of a team. 

Mad Science Camp
June 30 - July 3*

How High?  How Far?  How Big?  How fast?  How come?  Take it to the limit this summer with Mad Science up close!  Work with bubbles, flight, chemical reactions, electricity and more.  Discover and experience science first hand.

Legos Camp
July 7 – 11 

Experience the fun of building LEGO creations and structures.  Campers work in teams to build, test and customize their creations.  Creations include vehicles, animals and transformers.  Emphasis on creative problem-solving.

Cooking Camp
July 7 – 11 

Your Jr. Chef will prepare a variety of foods such as pizza, desserts, appetizers, and vegetables.  Setting the table, reading and following recipes, learning to measure and safety in the kitchen is also covered.

Rock Band Camp
July 14 – 18 

Rock Band Camp is a beginners to advanced learners camp that works great with kids who have had limited musical exposure to kids that already know how to play an instrument! In this camp we will explore different types of instruments and at the end of the week there will be a performance to showcase the new talents and skills learned. 

Art Camp
July 28 – August 1 

Experiment with various techniques and materials, combining them to create unique and individualized creations.  Learn the techniques of master artists and explore various art mediums to create drawings, paintings, collages and other works of art, using imagination and creativity. 

Sports Camps
Entering Grades 2 – 6

Basketball Camp
June 9 – 13

Athletes will work towards their full potential.  This clinic emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and using it to develop fundamentals.  Activities include ball handling, agility drills, defensive & offensive techniques, 3 on 3 and 5 on 5.

All Sports Camp
June 16 – 20

Develop your child’s motor skills and eye-hand coordination, as well as cooperation and critical thinking skills.  Your child will play team sports such as lacrosse, soccer, badminton, Frisbee, softball, volleyball as well as other less competitive sports in a fun, recreational environment.  We incorporate team-building initiatives and leadership skills also.

Do you love to dance? Get ready to move and groove this summer at LJCC's Summer Dance Camp! Suited for all levels of experience, campers will have the opportunity to learn ballet, jazz and hip-hop from professional instructors. We will start each morning with fun and exciting technique classes to provide a foundation for further dance studies. In the afternoon, our dancers will rehearse a choreographed dance piece that they will perform at the end of the session!

UAB Soccer Camp
July 7 – 11

Fee: $235

Open to boys and girls age 5 – 12. 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.  Let your child learn skills and techniques through exercises and games specifically designed for youth.  Campers are encouraged to learn and develop at their own pace under careful guidance.  Campers must bring a ball or purchase a ball for $25.  Bring your own lunch, swim suit and towel each day.  Registration forms available at LJCC Welcome Desk and at www.uabsoccercamp.com.

Kid Fitness Camp
July 14 – 18

Improve your fitness, speed, agility, flexibility and strength while gaining confidence and building self-esteem.  You’ll enjoy running and jumping, as well as coordination, and strength training while doing fun games.  Emphasis is setting goals, not competition.  Campers also prepare for the FitPass Test which allows member usage of our fitness center without supervision.

Girls’ Sports Camp

Lacrosse Camp
July 21 – 25

Lacrosse – aka “the fastest game on two feet”.  Learn the basic fundamentals, run basic drills, and have lots of recreational game time.  No experience or equipment necessary!  Just bring a bottle of water and tennis shoes or cleats.

Swim Camp
July 28 – August 1

Campers will improve their water skills while doing their favorite thing.  Swimming strokes, water games, pool safety, diving techniques, and synchronized swimming stunts are just a sample of what they’ll experience.  Intermediate swim skill required.

UK Soccer Camp
August 4-8

Our summer camp programs provide an age appropriate curriculum, which includes "Fun in the Sun", "Skills 'n' Thrills" and "Compete with your Feet" programs. We also offer specialized programs for teams and goalkeepers.

Teen Specialty Camps

The NEW LJCC Teen Specialty Camp is designed especially for teens and their busy schedule.  Each week has s different emphasis from Sculpture to Culinary Arts, Strength and Conditioning to Adventure Trips.  Campers will work with a specialist in their chosen field each morning and enjoy camp activities like swimming and games each afternoon. 

Entrepreneurship
June 9 – 13

Learn how create a vision of success and a business plan while working in small groups. Develop and market your product or idea, and present your concept to a panel of “sharks”.

Strength and Conditioning
June 23 – 27 

All kids will receive workouts based on their needs that continuously vary in order to maximize results. Sessions consists of dynamic warm up, speed & agility work and strength training. The sessions are highly motivational, and create an environment of teamwork & camaraderie with lots of individual instruction. We will also incorporate conditioning, stretching and yoga.

Mind and Body
June 30 – July 3*

Strengthen, stretch, balance and calm yourself by learning ways to care for your whole being- mind, body and heart. Through yoga poses and breathing techniques, massage, aromatherapy, color therapy and more, you will learn about the energy in your body and to get it flowing in the right direction to realize your fullest potential. Camp is led by Annie Damsky of Villager Yoga (villageryoga.com).

Junior Lifeguarding
July 7 – 11

The Lifeguarding Tomorrow program guides youth to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The course focuses on building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills of future lifeguards.

Prerequisites:

Before entering Junior Lifeguarding, participants must demonstrate the following skills: 

  • Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.

  • Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence.

  • Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs.

  • Show a level of comfort on the back by floating on the back for 30 seconds or swimming on the back for 25 yards using the elementary backstroke or back crawl.

  • Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.

Culinary Arts

Measure, mix and pour in the kitchen while learning about nutrition, kitchen safety and how to follow a recipe.  Campers will be making their own lunch, but picky eaters may want to bring a lunch with them.
