Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center
Serving Children Ages 6 Weeks through 6 Years
The mission of the Cohn Early Childhood Learning is to provide for children's growth and learning through Judaic, physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development. Through a safe and nurturing environment each child learns to develop his or her potential for initiative and self-reliance, along with responsibility, cooperation, and consideration of others.
How Our Philosophy Benefits You & Your Child
We believe that young children learn best by being actively involved in their environment and by engaging in activities that encourage individual growth. At the Cohn Early Childhood Learning Center your children are given a nurturing environment enriched with reading, math, language, science and art experiences in individual and small group settings in a project based approach. We are proud to provide a place where your children are celebrated for their differences and are given the tools to develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
Children are natural learners. A Jewish expression of values emphasizes that teachers inspire children to question their world and appreciate multiple perspectives. Based on an image of the child as a competent and capable learner full of potential, teachers and children engage in research as a way of co-constructing knowledge. When children are agents of their own learning, they build life-long critical thinking skills and are more deeply invested in the process.
"The dedication of our teachers to the children and to each other sets our program apart from all others. They are committed to providing the best care and educational experiences to every family we serve."
- Barbara Traweek, Director
Often the hardest decision for working parents is choosing a childcare facility that meets their needs and philosophy. It is safe? Is it nurturing and warm? Is the staff experienced and educated? At the ECLC the answer to all of these questions is "yes."
The ECLC has a rich history and outstanding reputation for providing the highest quality learning experience to families of all backgrounds who value our engaging and educational environment rooted in Jewish values.
We take great pride in being a partner in your child's development and growth and look forward to working with your family.
"Both of my children have attended the facility since they were twelve weeks old and we think of the staff as part of our family. As a working mom, the ECLC has helped me raise my two children in a very structured nurturing environment that focuses on education, ethics, positive influence, while providing a safe but fun place to go. As a new mom, the teachers also gave me guidance with my parenting skills; such as sibling rivalry, how to handle a 3 year old (smile), and even potty training. I couldn't think of a better place to send my children." - Jennifer Couch, parent
At the Cohn ECLC, our teachers view themselves as lifelong learners, constantly engaging in the pursuit of learning opportunities, as prized by our Jewish tradition. The combination of education, experience, and passion enriches educators’, children’s and families’ lives. We listen with the understanding that the relationships between school leadership, colleagues, children, families and community members depend on the richness of each conversation.
Our focus on professional development for teachers means quality care for your children. We maintain small group sizes and good teacher to student ratios, exceeding national and state standards. Our staff boasts over 173 years of combined experience in early childhood education. Many of our teachers hold advanced education degrees and many more are currently pursing continued education. All of our teachers undergo training in CPR and first aid each year as well as in-service training in six different areas of early childhood development.
"Our sons Henry, now 3, and Matthew, 2, are always happy at ECLC. They love their teachers!" - Keith Thomson, parent
FAMILIES AS ENGAGED PARTNERS
We view family engagement as essential to building a healthy school community. Every early childhood program includes family events, newsletters and committees. The Cohn ECLC goes beyond this to actively listen to and incorporate parents’ perspectives into how we think about teaching and learning.
Our early childhood program is rich with materials that inform, instruct and engage children. Our vision for the learning environment suggests an intentional place for children that provokes wonder, curiosity, intellectual engagement and creativity with endless possibilities. Attention is given to indoor and outdoor classrooms and common spaces to create community, build connections, and encourage and support opportunities for Jewish living.
ECLC is licensed to operate under the Alabama Department of Human Resources Division of Child Care Licensing.
"When your child wakes up every morning, including Saturdays and Sundays asking to go to school you know great things are happening here. The teachers, staff, fellow parents and children all have such a great sense of community and caring. The ECLC can't be square pegged as just a learning center, but more like a home sweet away from home for all of our precious cargo." - Mary Ann Saylor, parent of Jack (3 1/2 years young)
The ECLC is housed on the campus of the Levite Jewish Community Center. This beautiful, state-of-the-art facility gives children access to a range of important development activities at our indoor and outdoor pools, hiking trails, gymnasium, and more. We offer many extra curricular activities like ballet, soccer, gymnastics, computer lessons, tennis, art, basketball, swimming, and more - and your kids never have to leave the campus!
Our infant teachers understand the importance of providing early care and education and fostering development through:
- Individualized care and attention
- Exploration and discovery experiences to discover the world around them
- Reading, singing and talking to stimulate cognitive development and language
Our toddler classes provide children with experiences each day through interaction and engagement with their environment to encourage individual growth and to develop:
- Gross motor skills
- Fine motor skills
- Imagination and problem solving
